Working with Document Genetics: Finding the perfect placement
In late 2021, we worked with Document Genetics to find them a salesperson. When we first met, they weren’t sure at what level they wanted to hire. Together, we found the right fit for them.
We chatted with Rob Hunt, Director at Document Genetics to find out how everything has been going since then.
Can you start by telling us about your company?
Established in 1999, Document Genetics are a Northampton-based business, specialising in software development & services company with a focus on document management and business automation software. They employ 12 people and turnover £1M per annum.
DG efficiently transform documents into structured data and data into documents, and in almost all cases without the need for ANY changes to their business systems.
What has recruitment looked like in the past?
A lot of people that work for us are past colleagues, they’re people we know and we know we can work with. Myself and Joe are lucky in that we bring decades of industry experience, and with that, we bring contacts.
When we started out and needed to make a hire, we used to advertise roles in the local newspaper. Luckily, with LinkedIn and online recruitment, we were able to advertise roles a lot more effectively.
We’ve used a recruitment company once, for a member of our team that’s still with us, but the company didn’t really keep in touch once the role was filled.
How did you hear about Exceda?
We connected with Nikki through word of mouth. Our accountant was already working with Exceda Ltd and we heard good things.
What was the beginning of your engagement with Exceda like?
Around a year ago we were looking for a salesperson and we were faced with two options.
Did we go with someone who had lots of experience and industry knowledge but didn’t necessarily have that drive anymore? They’d of course be more expensive too, and we had to work out, was it worth it?
The other option was someone younger who was either just entering the working world from uni or perhaps pivoting careers. With this, we knew we’d have to train them, but also knew they’d be coming to this with energy and enthusiasm.
We were upfront with Nikki and she was able to come back to us pretty quickly with a select number of people.
She’d been really meticulous and had a clear idea of the people we were looking for.
We were presented with both an experienced and junior candidate. The more experienced one had the experience we were looking for, in our industry, it was clear he had a wealth of knowledge but we just didn’t feel the spark.
The second, we looked at his CV and it piqued our interest. He’s a pro rugby player who was just finishing university and wanted a career in sales. Through both interviews, he was just fantastic. Of the 5 or 6 people we considered, no one came close.
From the point we met Nikki, to the point we were making an offer and signing contracts was just 3 or 4 weeks, it was quick!
A year on, that hire is fantastic. He’s brilliant. It was a really successful hire.
What did you think of the quality of service provided by Exceda?
What sets Nikki and Exceda apart is that Nikki was regularly in contact following the placement. For the first three months, we checked in monthly. The whole process was conducted professionally, delivered well, and at a great pace.
We were also able to spread our payments, which for cash flow is always handy.
Do you have plans to work with Exceda in the future?
We don’t have current plans to recruit as we’ve got a good balance in our team. But when we do, I would go to Nikki, no questions.
